Cheryl Blazek's Personal Statement My name is Cheryl Blazek and I am running for a position on the Columbia school board. I am a graduate of Columbia High (’74) as well is my husband Philip (’68), and three daughters, Chandra (’01), Kristen (’03) and Jaclyn (’07). I know the benefits and problems of coming from a small school district, but I have always been grateful for the opportunities my education has given me and tried to pay the community back. Currently, I am on the board of education, but you may have seen me in the past serving spaghetti, setting up for the Copopa Holiday Shop, toting band equipment, washing cars, selling candy bars or Zap-a-Snack pizzas. I have a been a volunteer to the school district through PTA, Athletic Boosters, Band Boosters, and Academic Boosters for over twenty years. I was also active with my daughters scouting troops for many years. As a member of the Columbia School Board, I know there are many challenges that school districts face today and as everyone knows, too little funding to get it all done. It is important to have knowledgeable, experienced, dedicated leadership for your schools. Each board needs people willing to make tough decisions which does not means always saying “yes”. It does mean listening to concerns and finding a fair, balanced solution, then committing to an action that is in the best interest of students, staff, administration and community members. As our community can tell, we have great schools and everyone has worked hard to earn our Excellent with Distinction honor. I am proud to be a part of that effort. During the past seven years I have attended many state conferences, learning seminars and community events. My goal was to reach out to other districts and represent Columbia at a state level. I have earned two Achievement Awards from the Ohio School Board Association and in 2008 it was an honor to receive The Master Board Member award. This award was given to only 13 board members out of a field of 3,400 across the state and I accepted it proudly as a representative of the Columbia Local Schools. I am asking for your support and vote on November 3rd so I can continue to be a part of team of great people that have worked hard to bring a great education to our children.
